Commercial digital imagery consists of licensed photographs, illustrations and videos that companies use in their visual communications. Shutterstock's online marketplace provides a freely searchable library of commercial digital images that users can pay to license, download and incorporate into their work. Shutterstock compensates image contributors for each of their images that is downloaded.

Every contributor in their marketplace and every image they make available must pass Shutterstock's proprietary screening process and meet their standards of quality. In addition, Shutterstock's rigorous vetting process enables them to provide confidence and indemnification to their users that the images in their library have been appropriately licensed for commercial or editorial use.

Shutterstock is a pioneer of the subscription-based usage model in their industry, whereby subscribers can download and use a large number of images in their creative process without concern for the incremental cost of each download.
